More than 400 community and technical college students from around the state will converge on Alamo Community College District's St. Philip's College, San Antonio, TX when the school hosts and sponsors the SkillsUSA Texas College/Postsecondary Division 38th Annual Leadership and Skills Championships and Conference March 4-6, 2010. A TECHSPO and Career Fair (open to the public) will also be held on March 5, 2010 in conjunction with the skills competition. The TECHSPO and Career Fair will be held at St. Philip's College, Southwest Campus. Other ACCD campuses will also participate in this annual event.
The three-day event, will showcase some of the best trade, technical, and skilled service including allied health occupations students from throughout Texas, who will compete in 65 different categories, including architectural drafting, welding, diesel technology, firefighting, cosmetology, automotive technology, aircraft technology, allied construction trades, robtics, collision technology, public speaking, dental assisting, related technical math, customer service, mechatronics, First Aid/CPR, broadcast news production, and internetworking.
First place winners in the competition will qualify to advance to the National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Missouri,
June 20-25, 2010. The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. The Championships is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2009, there were over 6,000 contestants in 95 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management will make the national event possible. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs.
